Back in the Real World of Food

I've been back in the real world of food for a full week now. I thought I would 'follow the rules,' but I didn't.  Here is the suggested plan to reintroduce foods:

- Day 1: Evaluate dairy, while keeping the rest of your diet Whole30-compliant.
- Days 2 & 3 should be 100% Whole30-compliant so that your body can let you know how it reacted to the Day 1 food.
- Day 4: Evaluate gluten-containing grans, while keeping the rest of your diet Whole30-compliant.
- Days 5 & 6 should be 100% Whole30-compliant so that your body can let you know how it reacted to the Day 4 food.
- Day 7: Evaluate non-gluten grains, while keeping the rest of your diet Whole30-compliant.
- Days 8 & 9 should be 100% Whole30-compliant so that your body can let you know how it reacted to the Day 7 food.
- Day 10: Evaluate legumes, while keeping the rest of your diet Whole30-compliant.

I didn't exactly follow this and I paid for it later!  On day 1 I had three chocolate chip cookies from Subway. They do (did) have the best. After two i could tell that I didn't like the after taste. It wasn't what I remember them being, ya know?  They made me feel fat and sluggish!  Later that evening I went to a movie. I bought a small popcorn (stop rolling your eyes) and a Buncha Crunch. I wasn't thrilled with the popcorn, so I stopped eating it. The Buncha Crunch was waaaaay too sweet. I didn't like it at all.
 photo cookie_zpsrqfq083g.jpg
looks can be very deceiving!

Day two I had two bites of cheddar cheese while I was making breakfast. I didn't like the taste, so I threw the rest of it away.  With lunch I had a piece of pound cake. We had two birthdays in the office on Monday and it was from that. The cake was sooo good!  Later that evening I went to Panera for dinner. I ordered the the Asian Chicken Salad. I got it as is, torilla strips and bread as a side. It was delish! The bread was everything I had dreamed of.

I woke up on Thursday (day 3) slightly congested and my fingers were swollen. All that work and it was thrown away for some sweet treats that weren't even that good. I had some digestive issues later that morning and that's when I threw in the towel! To hell with the sweets and the breads! I didn't even eat all that much, but it's already effecting me so negatively. The kicker was when work surprised me with the Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake. I felt bad, but ate some of it anyways.

Before the baseball game on Friday I had a nice healthy dinner - chicken breast with avocado and a baked sweet potato. I didn't have hot dogs or french fries or peanuts. I did enjoy some chocolate ice cream and it was delish! However, that's that. No more! Nothing is worth feeling like poo (literally sometimes).

Due to the way I reintroduced foods (basically all at once...they way you're NOT supposed to do it) I don't know exactly what made me feel the worst. But, out of everything I did eat, none of it is worth it. I was supposed to go on a date and get pizza, but I cancelled that right away. I have no interest in pizza or diet coke. Those are words I never thought I would say.

This just goes to show you that the Whole30 works! Clean eating WORKS! I'm all for it!

#WHOLE30FORLIFE!
*unless there's a really super special occasion that requires me to eat cake!

Another week has gone by and here we are! Not only is today Friday, but . . .

 photo Its My Birthday_zpsejmaoxvj.jpg

{one} Today I am *32* years old. I'm going to a baseball game with my friends tonight and then tomorrow night I'm having dinner with some girlfriends. It's going to be a wonderful birthday.

{two}  Yesterday afternoon my coworkers surprised me with an early birthday chocolate chip cookie cake. It had pink icing on it and it said "Happy Birthday Erica." I had two big pieces and it was yummy! I can officially say I'm over the chocolate chip cookie. The week was full of them, but it was incredibly yummy!  Also, LeAnn Rimes and I have the same birthday. We tweeted each other :) Special shout out to all of my Celebrity Bday Buddies!

She opened up her own Paul Mitchell Focus salon a little over a year ago. Medina is also a Learning Leader at Paul Mitchell the School Roanoke. I'm so lucky to have her as my hair goddess!

{four} I came home to some birthday happy mail! My lovely friend Vashelle sent me a beautiful glittery birthday card with a lovely note inside.  One of my Lady Writers, Angie, send me a crafty little birthday package.

Too Much Television

There once was a girl who watched too much television. It was all she knew and loved. The TV was her escape from reality. Her escape from when she didn't get along with her brother. Her escape from when school wasn't going well or those kids were being mean. Her escape when she just wanted to get away from reality.

Yup, you guessed it. That girl was me. Still is me. Except my brother and I get along great now and I don't have to deal with the 'kids at school' anymore. I do have to deal with reality and that's not always so fun. That's when I turn to my good friend, the television.

It's no secret that I love my shows and movies. Netflix has it going on with their original series. I'm a pro when it comes to binge watching. I get sucked in so bad! Sometimes it's hard to turn the television off.

 photo Shows_zpsd6thysgw.jpg

I love reading books. I'm in the Fab Four Book Club with three other fabulous ladies. We start our first book club book September 1st. I am still doing pretty good on the Goodreads Reading Challenge and am three books ahead in order to hit 20 for the year, but I want to read more.

With that said I have begun a LessTV30 Challenge :) A bit of play off the Whole30 that I've just finished. I officially started yesterday, Tuesday 08/25/15. The only problem that I'll be facing with this challenge is missing the Fall TV Premiers of The Mindy Project (Hulu), Scream Queens, Life In Pieces, Law & Order SVU, and Nashville. The weekend of September 26th will be a total binge watch!

Here are the rules I'm setting for myself:
     1. No television/Netflix/Hulu after 5pm Monday-Thursday.
     2. No television/Netflix/Hulu between 10am - 5pm on Saturday
     3. No television/Netflix/Hulu between 10am - 5pm or after 8pm on Sundays

I watch too much television after work instead of going to the gym or being production in other ways. The goals I have with this challenge are to finish Along Came A Spider, read Orange is the New Black, and read a third book. I also want to make the gym a habit/routine.

Feel free to join in my challenge!

My Whole30 Journey

 photo Finished Whole 30_zpsrudcfjjw.jpg

I have completed the Whole30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a month it has been. No Diet Coke. No Cheese. No Bread. No Pizza. No Sweets. It's been crazy!

Here's how it went . . .

THIS IS HOW I FOUND THE WHOLE30
My Mom introduced me to MindBodyGreen and their daily emails. I started getting them as well and in one of the emails the Whole30 was mentioned. The article was super intriguing, so I went to Barnes and Noble, read the first page of the book and was sold! I gave myself 1 week to read the book before starting the program.

THIS IS WHAT MY LIFE USED TO BE LIKE
- Technically, I was overweight when I started the Whole30. I was just over the line, which is 154lbs, at my age/height. My doctor had been telling me for a year that I needed to lose weight. In May of 2014 I was at 158lbs and my doctor wanted me to get down to 140lbs. At some point after that I gained six more pounds putting me at 164lbs, my heaviest to date.  Then, in September 2014, I had a bit of a kidney stone sitaution and eight pounds.
- In December of 2014 I was at 156lbs and when I went to the doctor for my bi-annual appointment he said, "we didn't lose that weight did we?"  When July 2015 rolled around and I was at 158lbs I knew I needed to make some serious changes.
- I had some serious digestive issues before doing the Whole30. (tmi...!) I was always bloated, constantly had gas, and diarrhea way too often. If you've read my blog long enough, then you know my history with kidney stones! My seasonal allergies were also pretty annoying.

DURING MY WHOLE30 EXPERIENCE
My first week I craved the sweets. The second week I craved the chip and crackers. I was even dreaming that I had drank some diet coke. I woke up feeling super guilty! My cravings (except for chocolate chip cookies) went away after the first two weeks. There was only one day where I felt super grumpy all day. I learned that if I was grumpy, then it was probably time to eat.

 photo Whole 30 On_zpsz7dm41wi.jpg

WHAT WENT WELL
- I learned how to cook! I mean, really cook. I made some amazing recipes and they came out successful.
- I love chopping! I bought a brand new knife and it is amazing. The first few days of having it all I wanted to do was chop chop chop!
- I have a new appreciation for fresh fruits and vegetables and the farmers market.
- I've eaten a lot more fish than I have before. I've had salmon/white fish at least once a week if not twice.
- I learned how to tame my cravings. The book says that when you think you're hungry ask yourself if you're hungry enough for Salmon with grilled vegetables. If  you are, then you are legitimately hungry. If you're not hungry enough for the salmon, but would eat (fill in the blank), then you're having a craving.
- I learned to stop eating when I'm full. In the past I would eat the entire pizza simply because the delicious food was still there. I would be uncomfortable afterwards. Not anymore! That's what "Left Overs" are for.
- I can live without Diet Coke and Pizza! I never thought it was possible. For years I've tried giving up diet coke and was a complete and total failure. Pizza, don't even talk to me about pizza! I think this is the longest I've ever gone without pizza. Surprisingly enough, once I got over the cravings I didn't even think about diet coke and pizza.
- My seasonal allergies are pretty much gone! The only time I sneeze is when I'm cooking and that's because of the spices. I'm no longer waking up congested. I have a funny feeling it's due to dairy.

WHAT COULD HAVE GONE BETTER
- If I owned a food processor or a crock pot, then I could have made more dishes. There are some great recipes in there that I'm missing out on.
- I should really learn to read a recipe. I'll get all the ingredients and then realize I don't have the means to make the plate (carnitas...need a crock pot | bbq sauce...need a food processor).
- I could have gone to the gym more often. I'm super lazy about the gym anyways, so that's nothing new.

MY RESULTS IN NUMBERS
I started the Whole30 on July 26th. I took before pictures and measured/weighed.
  • Weight: 157.8
  • Bicep: 11.25
  • Waist: 34.5
  • Hips: 41.75
  • Thigh: 19.25
 photo Before Whole30 157.8_zpstnyv5ci2.jpg
Here are today's measurements and after pictures:
  • Weight: 148.2
  • Bicep: 10.5
  • Waist: 33.5
  • Hips: 39
  • Thigh: 20
 photo After Whole30_zps1in4pm3a.jpg
I've lost 9.6lbs! I can't believe it. I broke the 150 barrier! I'm going to try adding a few things back into my diet, but I'm going to be super careful. I don't want to get sick, feel like poo, or gain any weight back. I also need to get to the gym regularly! I say this a lot, but I still have 8.2lbs to lose for the doctor. Then after that I have my own goal I want to hit.

If you're looking to change your food lifestyle and wanting to be healthier, I absolutely recommend the Whole30! It is amazing and I am so glad that I did it, stuck to it, and succeeded!

{two} After finding out that I lost 7.4 pounds in the first two weeks of the Whole30 I weighed the following week. I had lost one more pound. I realized that those 8.4 pounds was going to be the bulk of it. That means I need to get my butt back to the gym! I started back on Tuesday and have been four days in a row. I have schedule that I'm trying to keep - four days on, one day off. Monday is my last day on the Whole30 and I'll weigh on Tuesday. Wish me luck!

{three} I treated myself to an express manicure at Polished this week. I love this color from OPI - Pumped Up Cherry. I'm pampering myself next Friday for my birthday and will be putting this color on my toes. Love it!

{four}  I've joined Junior League in Roanoke and we had our first social this week. It was mostly New Members and the women on the New Membership Committee. I'm super excited to be a part of Jr League.
 photo Junior League_zpspyw9yl7o.jpg

{five}  Doing the Whole30 has opened up my wardrobe for me! I haven't worn this skirt or top in a long while. They both fit great and I'm so excited. This makes it all worth it! Diet Coke...? Never Again!

Celebrating Pride

 photo Pride vs Perish_zpsnsfir87e.jpg
Over the weekend I headed down to Charlotte, North Carolina for Pride Weekend. A friend of mine, Melissa - Comic MD, is a stand up comic and was performing in the VIP tent at the Pride Festival in Uptown Charlotte. I've only been to Charlotte one other time and another festival was going on as well - Speed Street.  Pride was so much fun. So many characters come out for festivals and Pride is no different. The picture above shows the intersection of Tyron Street and E. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. You've got the opposing sides of Pride yelling at each other. Very interesting!

My other friend Melanie lives down in Charlotte and I stayed with her and we went to Uptown on Saturday. We had sooo much fun!

After Pride Melanie and I got dinner and headed back her place. We chatted about our love lives (or lack there of) and watched X-Files. On Sunday Melanie took me to a great little spot for brunch ~ Zeda Jane's Corner Cafe. It was sooo yummy! I got a made to order omelette and some bacon.

After brunch I headed home to Roanoke. I decided to take the Blue Ridge Parkway home. It's such a beautiful route. It only took an extra 30 minutes to get home and it was completely worth it!

Super Heroes | + Giveaway

 photo Superheros_zpsg5zsitb6.jpg

My first memory of a superhero would have to be Batman. Michael Keaton's Batman, to be specific, from 1989 (I was 6 years old). I loved those movies! He was just fantastic and quirky and so cute. Val Kilmer was in the third installment and he was fine. George Clooney came along and I remember joking with my parents about him being Dr. Batman since he was still on ER at the time. Clooney and Kilmer were okay, but Keaton was the best! When I lived in Los Angeles I met Michael Keaton.  He was so nice. It made me love Batman even more after that!

In 1993 Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman became a huge hit on television. I, of course, had a super huge crush on Dean Cain. For five seasons I was all about Clark Kent. I even had a crush on Jimmy the paperboy for a while there. Then all of the X-Men movies started coming out and Hugh Jackman was HUGE as Wolverine. James Marsden played Cyclops. Shawn Ashmore was in X-Men 2 playing Iceman (sooo cute) and then Ben Foster in X-Men: Last Stand. I could go on. There have been sooo many X-Men Movies!

When Christopher Nolan came out with Batman Begins in 2005 I fell back in love with Batman. No amount of Avengers, Iron Mans, Thors, or even the ever-so-handsome Henry Cavill as Superman could take the place of Batman. I think Christian Bale did a fantastic job as the Dark Knight. For me it's not Bruce Wayne. I don't care about the money and the fancy penthouse. It's the Bat. It's the suit. There is just something about the husky voice and the mysteriousness. The whole bad-boy thing. Can you blame me? Christian Bale is so handsome!

Recently my attention has been turned to the Female Superheroes. My dear friend Stephanie over at In Her Wonderland LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVES Superheros. She is Wonderwoman. Her pup, Walter, is also a Superhero.

 photo Walter_zpspvfmx7mc.jpg

Stephanie has totally gotten me into superheroes so much more than before. She has coined me as Supergirl! She even sent me the cutest Supergirl Lego Keychain and I love it! Now whenever I'm in a store Superhero stuff pops out at me! I found  notebook at T.J. Maxx (they have the best stuff) and I immediately had to buy it! The 'S' is all glittery and girly! Totally for Supergirl :)

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice coming out in 2016 we are finally getting a peak at Wonder Woman. She looks AMAZING!
 photo WonderWoman_zpsjhjqojsu.png
{full trailer here}

In October CBS has Supergirl premiering and I can't wait! Dean Cain (aka Superman) is even in 1 episode! Melissa Benoist is playing the superhero. You might recongize her from Glee as Marley. I'm really excited to have my own show for this show to start.

Who are your favorite Superheroes?

Speaking of superheroes, I'm joining my friends Mia and Stephanie (Wonder Woman) in an awesome giveway that is perfect for the photographer in your life ~ {Mug, Lens Cap, Phoneography Starter Kit} You won't be disappointed!
