Looking Back at 2015

Happy holidays everyone!

I am back and excited to be here. I've got a new design just in time for a new year. I thought I would return with a look back on my year.

 photo Looking Back at 2015_zpsauhphrw6.jpg

What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before?
I went to my first religious trade show! I attend three of them a year now, since I handle the religious market at my job.

Did you keep your New Year's resolutions?
2015 Resolutions:
Make Healthy Choices - This is always a challenge for me. I love the stuff that's 'bad' for you. Pizza, diet coke, chocolate chip cookies...yummy!  I'm a work in progress ;)
Pay Off Debt - My goal in 2015 was to be debt free by March. That didn't quite happen.
Back Off Of Facebook - Ugh...I can't stand Facebook.  I actually deleted it twice over the summer and wrote an entire post about how FB is my nemesis {here}.  I'm still on Facebook, but I really try not to use it. There are some days, however, where I can't take my eyes off of it.
Read 20 Books - I actually read 22 books!
Watch Less Television - I've been pretty good about this and usually have the television off by 8pm and then I read a bit before going to bed.
Journal Every Day - I haven't been journaling every day, but it has still been on a regular basis.
Be Grateful - Every day!

Will you make more in 2016?
2016 Resolutions Goals:
Get my weight down once and for all
Debt free by 33 (August)
Read 30 books

What date from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory?
December 1st is when I adopted my kittens!

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Moving into my apartment and becoming a fur-momma.

What did you get really excited about?
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios!!!!!! It was amazing!!!!!
Taylor Swift in concert at Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC {recap post here}
Britney Spears Live in Las Vegas!
 photo Harry Potter Collage_zps5vqi5nnj.jpg

What song will always remind you of 2015?
Adele's Hello

How will you be spending Christmas?
I am hosting Christmas at my apartment and am making dinner. No Turkey in my house! I'm making Cornish Hens, Sausage/Apple/Acorn Casserole, Roasted Rainbow Carrots, and Crescent Rolls.  Mom is bringing Green Beans with Fig Vinaigrette and an Apple Pie. It's going to be scrumptious! After dinner we will be heading up to the IMAX 3D theater to see Star Wars.

What were your favorite TV Shows in 2015?
Vampire Diaries, Orphan Black, and Jane the Virgin

What were your favorite Movies in 2015?
Jurassic World was hands down my favorite movie of the year!

What was the best book you read in 2015?
The Whole30 was the best one, because it taught me sooo much! You can see all of the books I read this year on my Goodreads page.

What did you do on your birthday?
I turned 32 this year and for my birthday I went to a Salem Red Sox game with my friends and family. We had a great time, ate ice cream and watched the fireworks after the game!
 photo PicMonkey Collage_zpskftzf0hu.jpg

What is a valuable lesson you learned in 2015?
When it comes to relationships, the first thing we must remember is that they must be life-giving rather than life-depleting. Some of us struggle because we have allowed relationships to flourish that are full of toxic emotions such as negativity, criticism, comparison, jealousy, insecurity, and fear.  We can't pursue God's purpose for our lives if we are constantly weighed down by negative relationships.  Let's evaluate the relationships in our lives and build those that helps you work toward our purpose and destiny.  Determine which ones have the biggest influence on us, which ones help us and which ones hinder us, and which ones encourage us to know God more every day.  Choose friendships that are full of life!
A dear friend of mine posted that on her Facebook wall in December of 2014.  Unfortunately this particular friend and I had a falling out and haven't spoken in some time. The words she wrote are very true, but that doesn't make them any easier.  Letting go is no easy feat. You can only believe and have faith that what's for you will not pass you.  I truly believe that if something, or someone, is meant to be in your life, then it will be.

I hope you all had a wonderful year! Here's to 2016!

I'm Taking A Break

 photo Taking a Break_zpsgcmdgq2h.jpg

If you haven't noticed I haven't been blogging very much lately. I've done a couple 'High Five For Friday' posts and two or three other posts, but that's about it. I just haven't felt motivated. I haven't even felt very motivated at work either, but don't tell my boss that ;-)

I signed up for NaNoWriMo thinking that it would give me motivation to write.  I haven't written a single word. Remember how I wrote that post about my over-commitment issues (here)? I have all these grand ideas for novels, movies, blog posts, but I haven't felt it at all. I haven't wanted to turn my computer on at home at all. I just sit there and watch television.  Even now I don't know what to say. Could this be writer's block?

Whatever it is, I've decided to take an official break from blogging. I don't want to publish posts that are just fluff and I feel like that's what I would be doing right now. I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving and with the holidays upon us I feel like this is a good time to take a break all together. Mabye after the New Year I'll be back. Who knows! You can still follow me on Instagram (@1hotredhd) or Twitter (@ericamusyt).

High Five For Friday!

Happy Friday! November is half way over, can you believe it?! I started my #ImThankful2015 campaign last week, but have already been slacking on Instagram posts. Here's what I've been thankful for lately:

{one} I'm part of a book club that is strictly online, because we live in different states. We were discussing our October book, Misery. It was a great chat and I had a lot of fun. It was also my first time using the webcam on my computer.

{two} While I was in DC I got to see my brother. He picked a great Italian restaurant, Lupo Verde, and it was fantastic. We were able to catch up on life. Love ya bro!

{three} I also got to see my dear friend Marina. I love this girl. She's fantastic and I miss getting to hang out with her. We always have such a great time together!

{four} I am loving this fall weather that we are having. The leaves are changing and falling and so pretty!

{five} Have you seen Jane the Virgin? If not GET ON NETFLIX now!!!!!!! It's such a great show. Gina Rodriguez is fantastic as Jane. The writing is fantastic and it's so original. I can't stop watching it!

How was your week?
I hope you have a great weekend!

High Five For Friday

Happy Friday everyone! I had quite the week of travel to and from Dallas, TX for a trade show.  I am glad to be home!  Halloween is here and gone and the holidays are on the way. I'm already seeing Holiday Christmas shopping commercials on television. CRAZY!  Let's check out the week we've just had, shall we?

Halloween was a lot of fun this year. I dressed up as Helena from Orphan Black and met up with my parents. A local theater was showing Rocky Horror Picture Show and had brought a comedic troupe in from Blacksburg. I twas definitely an experience. I'm glad I finally got to see Rocky Horror the way it's meant to be seen.

My dear friend Liz had a book release at a fabulous local cupcake shop. She has an awesome book series called Donovan Circus and her fourth book in the series Ignited came out the last week of October. I am currently reading the first book in the series, Gifted, and I am loving it! Go check out Liz's page here. You won't regret it.

I headed to Dallas for the first time this week.  They say that everything is bigger in Texas. Everything felt pretty much the same size..haha!  I sure did eat a lot though!  I got to meet my new director of sales (he starts with us on December 1st) and he's a really nice guy. I think he'll mesh well with the rest of the team here at the CVB.

{four} While at the conference in Dallas I got to meet Sherri Shepherd. She was one of our key note speakers.  We were able to get a photo op with her and she was so nice!

On Wednesday I talked about being Thankful (full post here).  As much fun as travel can be I always enjoy coming home to Roanoke. There's nothing prettier than the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Being Thankful

I complain a lot. Don't we all? It's one of those things you don't mean to do, but find yourself doing. You wake up with the intention of having a great day, then on your way to work some a-hole doesn't use a turn signal and screws up the traffic pattern.  See what I did there?

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away I want to be more thankful. I had a great mentor when I was still living in Washington, D.C. who had me think of three things that I'm grateful each day. Sometimes I let the negative things consume me too much and I forget about all the wonderful things that happen.

With today being November 4th, I'm already a few days behind. I'll be posting what I'm thankful for each day starting tonight on Instagram.  Make sure to follow me here at @1hotredhd.  Here's some catching up ~

 photo Blog Post ImThankful2015_zps9do5bfne.jpg

Sunday, November 1st
I am grateful for wonderful company. A friend of mine came over Sunday evening just to hang out. We watched a little TV, I packed for my Dallas trip and then I made us a yummy dinner. It was very relaxing and comfortable and just fun.

Monday, November 2nd
I am grateful for the super sweet flight attendant who gave me a bag of chex mix for FREE!  I was sitting in the very last row of the airplane and was starving by the time the beverage cart came around. He heard me ask about the price of snacks and he just dropped the bag of chex mix on my tray.  Thanks dude!

Tuesday, November 3rd
While at the Rejuvenate 2015 trade show I was honored to hear Beck Weathers speak about his experience climbing Mount Everest.  You might be familiar with the movie Everest that is out in theaters right now.  Beck is one of the men in that story and one of the survivors of that climb and he told us his amazing story. I'll share more about this life threatening encounter on Monday's post, but it was incredible. It makes you grateful for waking up each day!

Starting tonight, for the remainder of November, I'll be posting what I'm thankful for each day.  Make sure to follow me on Instagram - @1hotredhd. I'll be using the hashtag #ImThankful2015. Please join in with me if you like!

Each day is a new experience and you'll never know what you'll find!

3 Inspiring Ted Talks

You guys know about my health/fitness journey and battle with food. You also know about my 'love' of challenges and over-committing myself. I found a few Ted Talks that I wanted to share with you.

Back in 2010 Jamie Oliver had a television show called Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. He traveled to Huntington, WV.  In 2008 Huntington was found to be America's unhealthiest city by the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention based on adult obesity rates and related diseases (here). In his Ted Talk, Jamie tells the audience about the amount of sugar kids are eating in schools as well as the lack of knowledge kids have these days about vegetables. Take a look -

You know how I did that thing called the Whole30? Well, Matt Cutts challenges himself with a new 30 day challenge all the time. Photo challenges, No- Sugar challenges, and so on.  He says that you can start a new habit or quit a bad habit in just 30 days.
Check it out -

You guys know how much I love my challenges :)  I love writing about them and making my challenges known. I always thought it was a great way to hold myself accountable. Derek Sivers thinks you should keep your goals to yourself.
Here's why -

I found Matt and Derek's talks pretty interesting. I know all about the '30 day' notion and this time I'm going to take Derek's advice and keep my goals to myself. November is going to be a good month. I can feel it.

What do you think?

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! How was everyone's week? Are you ready for Halloween??? I wasn't too excited about it, but yesterday I had an epiphany for a costume and am super excited!!!!!!!!!  Anyways, let's get on with it, shall we?

I participated in Mailbox Surprise Swap for the month of September (yes, I'm a little late in posting) and I was paired up with Shann. Shann and I were both crazy busy and were delayed a bit. We finally got our packages out to each other.  She sent me a lovely box of goodies. Note cards with an E on them, an E stamp, and a ladybug card on an E stand.  She also sent me a chalk board with pink and purple chalk.  She also sent me a cute little cosmetic bag with some goodies. Thank you Shann so much! I love it all :)

Last Saturday I went up to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Hokies football game. My work had a booth in Hokie Village and we were passing out foam fingers.  It was so much fun seeing everyone that came out for the game.  The Virginia Tech Marching Band came through Hokie Village with the cheerleaders and dancers. So many current students and alumni were there as well. Did I mention it was VT's Homecoming?  During half time they announced the homecoming court.  A Gamma Phi Beta was crown homecoming queen. I couldn't be prouder of a fellow sister :)

During the game I sat with some of my friends that I've met through Junior League. They are awesome ladies and I'm loving every minute of my time with the League.

I've been getting a little better with my food since falling off my food wagon. I chopped up some bell peppers so that they are ready to go in the morning for a yummy omelette. I also made some pork sausage patties for the week and they are so delicious! Check out the guacamole stuffed chicken. It was fantastic. I found the recipe on Pinterest and it is super easy to make. I made one with cheese and bacon stuffed in it for my friend. I didn't try it, but he said it was quite yummy.

Just in time for Halloween I've gotten hooked on season four of American Horror Story: Freak Show. It is crazy!

Meet Cassie!

Happy Monday everyone! Welcome to another week...the last week of October! Can you believe that November is practically here?  Are you ready for Halloween?  Oh goodness me :-)  To get your Monday Moving I have a fabulous lady to introduce you to.

 photo Cassie 02_zps7azirexs.jpg

For the month of October I participated in being a Solidarity Sister. Susannah at Simple Moments Stick put this all together and it is fantastic! I spent the last few weeks getting to know Cassie from Always A Blogsmaid.  Cassie and I could not have been more perfectly paired. We are in very similar places in our lives and got along so well.  Here's a fun little interview to help get you and Cassie acquainted. Make sure to check out her blog!

You know how much I love movies, so what is YOUR favorite movie of all time and why?
My favorite movie of all time is Cruel Intentions.  I just love everything about it - great actors, the wit/sarcasm, and an even greater soundtrack.  It was the first movie I ever bought on dvd; mostly because I couldn't find it on VHS anywhere.

How did you get into blogging and what do you love most about it?
On labor day four years ago, I had my first weekend at the lake with friends.  One of the friends, Kathleen, was telling me how she had a blog and I was instantly curious.  I spent an unhealthy amount of time on Xanga and MySpace back then, so a blog wasn't a stretch for me.  When I got home from the lake, I signed up on blogger.com and started writing down life experiences.

What I love most about blogging is the community.  I love being able type in a URL and immediately connect with another blogger.  I have met two girls so far in real life that I call friends, Lauren & Amy.  I wouldn't have met them without this blog and for that, I'm forever grateful.  My goal is to meet all my blogging friends, so you may be next! :)

Looking back on your life, what are you most proud of?
Almost everyone you know these days has gone to college.  Well, I was the first one in my family to graduate from community college and a university.  If I had to pick one thing to be most proud of?  Becoming a Hinds Hi-Stepper.  Attending Hinds changed my life for the better, but becoming a part of a sisterhood that continues to re-connect each year is something I'll always be proud of.

Are you doing what you love? If not, what would you rather be doing?
I can't say that I am doing what I love.  If I'm being honest, I'm doing what pays the bills right now (as long as I never move out).  I am constantly asking myself "what do I want to do?" and I can't ever give a straight answer.  I have been told plenty of times that I should be a party planner or a writer, so that's something to work towards.

What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re not working?
Some of my favorite things to do are hang out with my friends, travel, go to the movies, lay on the beach and read a book, watch Netflix, plan celebrations for friends, buy gifts for others, get manicures/pedicures, hold babies, and send snail mail to friends when they least expect it.
 photo Cassie 01_zpsxflyyfhn.jpg
Favorite food and beverage?
Hamburger and French fries - and a cold, Dr. Pepper.

What are some of your goals?
Short term goals include paying off my car & student loans.  Once that's done, save money to buy a house.  Grow my blog by being more consistent with posting.  And of course the given ones: be healthier, lose weight, etc.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Since I'll be 33 then, I would hope that house would be purchased and sharing it with someone I love, hopefully married.  Maybe a child (if that's in God's plan for me).

What do you wish you had more time to do?
I wish I had more time to just travel instead of sitting in a cubicle long enough to get some personal leave.  I wish I had more time to enjoy the day to day instead of wondering if I have enough money/living paycheck to paycheck.  I wish I had more time to just be, instead of be-ing somewhere or someone.

If you could go anywhere in the world for 30 days, where would you go and why?
ITALY.  I spent a few days of my sophomore year in college in Rome and Florence, Italy.  I would love to be able to go back and visit Positiano? - the beach, the culture.  30 days may not even be enough to soak in all the Italian culture has to offer.

If you had $10,000 what would you do with it?
The first thing I would do is pay off all my student loans so that no longer is holding me back with a minimum payment every month.  With the $4,000 left over, I would put part of it in savings and I would buy a plane ticket to California and visit friends.

Hey y'all!  My name is Cassie and I write a lifestyle blog over at Always, A Blogsmaid.  I started my blog in 2011, a year after graduating college, to document my post-grad life.  I spend my weekdays in a cubicle and spend my weekends traveling to visit friends.  For about 18 months, I was holding a lot of bouquets, but now I hold a lot of babies.  I am single, living at home with my parents and paying off student loans. If bridesmaid stories, baby holding, and weekend travels interest you, please stop by my blog anytime!  If you want to keep up with with my random, post-college days, you can find/contact me here:

High Five For Friday

Happy Friday!!!!!  Another week has gone by and the weekend is here!  I hope you all had a fabulous week and that your weekend is stacked with awesome stuff or chill stuff.  I know that my weekend has a little bit of both worked in.

Saturday I went to the mall and found myself a little something at Hot Topic.  You know how much I love Orphan Black.  Hot Topic has a line just for the show - t-shirts, accessories, fun stuff.  Well, on clearance I found this t-shirt. I love it!!!!!!!!

On Saturday I helped celebrate this fabulous woman's birthday. She's my closest friend and my person. Love you lady!

On Sunday my dear friend from NOVA was in town. We went to breakfast and caught up on our lives :) I gave her a quick driving tour of Roanoke. It was great to see her! xoxo

Wednesday, October 21, 2015 was Back to the Future Day. Valley View Grande was showing a Back to the Future marathon. The first one is totally my favorite, because I wish I could go back in time to the 1950's.  It was so cool when the below shot came on the screen in Back to the Future Part II and everyone cheered! So.Much.Fun!

On Thursday I went up to Smith Mountain Lake to visit some of our hotel partners. I hadn't been up to visit a few of the properties before and I'm so glad that I did. It is so beautiful up there. It really made me want to move to the country and get a lake house.

Cozy Fall Essentials

 photo cozy fall essentials_zpsrq9etarh.jpg

This was the first weekend that really felt like fall. The air was crisp and cool with the sun shining!  I was lucky enough to be outside both Saturday and Sunday.  When the weather is like this I love cuddling up inside in the evening. I get on my nice comfy couch and curl up in a blanket. Sometimes I'll put a movie on or just read a book.  I'll definitely light a candle to set the cozy mood. I love lavender, but around fall and winter and like to have something more season.  Here are some ideas to help you get cozy this fall . . .

The bedding brand Parachute has some amazing things to fill your home with.  Let's start with the bedroom first, shall we?  This photo makes me want to curl up in bed! This Luxury Sateen Duvet Cover (check it out HERE) comes in some beautiful neutral tones. I love this navy set.
 photo Sateen Duvet Cover_zpsolkcog5k.jpg

This Linen Duvet Cover Set (check it out HERE) makes me want to have a pillow fight or build a pillow fort! In my pajamas, of course!
 photo Linen Duvet Cover Set_zpspzwhhjds.jpg
On the weekend when I crawl out of bed, only to relocate to the couch, the first thing I do is grab my slippers. I recently found out I have plantar fasciitis. Total bummer! Luckily for me, Fleet Feet sells amazing products with great arch support. These slippers are made by Vionic and are super comfy! My feet stay warm and supported (check them out HERE).
 photo Vionic Slippers_zps4hlkjqh3.jpg

I love candles, so I'll light the lavender or whatever I have on hand that is seasonal.  Parachute has a lavender and a fireside sent. Ahhh-mazing (HERE)!

I can't forget the key ingredient to a cozy fall day - the blanket!  Parachute has cashmere throws that are so beautiful (HERE)! My favorite is the Denim and Pebble Gray cashmere throw. It would fit perfectly with the color scheme I have going on in my living room.
