Movie Monday ~ The Sci-Fi Remake

Happy Monday everyone!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  Did everyone get rain on Saturday?  At least Sunday turned out to be a beautiful fall day!  I didn't get out to the movie theater this weekend, but I did rent some movies from Redbox.  The one I'm writing about today is Star Trek: Into Darkness.

I grew up with Star Trek in my life.  My dad is a HUGE Star Trek fan.  Particularly the Captain Picard days on Next Generation.  He has seen all of the Star Trek movies.  When the first remake of Star Trek came out in theaters in 2009 I asked my dad what movie I should watch to prepare for it.  He suggested I watch Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).  So I did and I actually really liked it! I don't think I had seen a Star Trek movie before that.  I went and saw the new Trek movie and it was good.  I was impressed and my dad was so proud!

My parents had seen Into Darkness in the theaters back in May when it came out and really liked it.  They told me that it was basically a remake of The Wrath of Khan.  Because I had really liked the original I was concerned that I wouldn't like the new Star Trek movie.  I didn't end up seeing it in theaters, but finally decided to rent it this weekend.  I honestly really couldn't tell, but it had also been about four years since I had seen it.  The Into Darkness movie was pretty good.  Chris Pine is HOT!  He really does make a good Captain James Kirk.

There was one thing about the movie that was weird - their cell phones!  They had flip phones :) haha!  The movie takes place in the year 2259.55 (that's what it said on the screen) and they had flip phones!  Also, we see Kirk wake up in bed with 2 "girls."  They were alien of some sort with tails and gills.  It was weird!

It got me thinking about another sci-fi remake - Total Recall.  I had never seen the original with Arnold Schwarzenegger and I knew the one with Colin Farrell was coming out.  I borrowed it from a friend and to my absolute surprise I really liked it!  I went with a friend to see the new one and was actually disappointed.  I really really liked the one with Arnold!  Of course, the graphics in the new one were better, but I thought the story line was so much better in the 1990 version.  It just made more sense and flowed a lot better.  Plus, how can you not like a midget stripper!  Hilarious!

Thanks for stopping by for Movie Monday!  Have a great week!

be brave

This is totally my anthem right now!  Sara Bareilles song Brave has been on a repeat loop on my iPod all week.  I just love what she's saying in the song about speaking up for yourself and not holding your words back.  It's some good advice!

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins

But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good,
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

My Adventures in Online Dating

I mentioned in this post that I was currently on the OkCupid dating site.

I have been on this site before; back when I lived in Los Angeles. Back then I went out on two dates from OkCupid.  The first guy showed up 30 minutes late.  I was actually just about to leave when he walked in the door.  He thought he was so smooth throughout the entire date and even tried to kiss me at the end.  What date was he on?  The second guy was super nice, but looked nothing like his pictures, plus there just wasn't any chemistry.  They can't all be winners.

I've been on OkCupid again for about a month now and have messaged back and forth a few different guys. I've updated my profile a few times already along with my pictures.  The thing I like about online dating is that I can be picky without being judged.  Although, I got a really judgmental message from a guy wanting to know why people in this area were so against interracial dating.  Anyways, there are certain things that I prefer in a man that others would find judgmental.  But let's be honest...aren't we all judgmental to a point? Sure you can have these opinions, but with the right guy, none of it actually matters!

The one thing that does stay constant on my profile is the "My Details" section.  I like to make sure everything is filled out.  It's a good way for people to get a quick idea about you.  You can get a decent idea about someone just by their details.  Height (I like a guy to be taller than me..I enjoy wearing 3 inch heels), how often they drink, if they smoke or do drugs, their religious beliefs, etc.

Something else that I like about OkCupid is the "Questions" section.

(From my Phone App)

There are hundreds of questions.  I myself have answered 350 questions.  When you are viewing someone's profile you can only see questions that both of you have answered.  Some of the questions I have found to be extremely inappropriate and have chosen not to answer.  For instance:

Are you fetish friendly?
Would you tied up during sex, do the tying, or avoid bondage all together?
Would you ever consider cutting a partner (who asked for it) during sexual play?

I mean really???? Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I write this I have met one guy from OkCupid in person.  He's very attractive, has a college degree, has a good job, seems to be a gentleman, and we had good conversation the first time we met.  We've hung out a couple times, but I'm starting to wonder about this guy.  So, I turned to the "Questions" and actually learned a few things that I hadn't picked up on before.

#1 How important is religion/God in your life?
Erica: Somewhat important
Him: Not very important
The reason for my answer is because I do not currently belong to a congregation.  I was raised in the Catholic church and would like to raise my children the same way and yes, I would like to marry a fellow Catholic.

#2 Do you believe in God?
Erica: Yes
Him: Yes
This was his comment: "I believe in something, but not sure what that is.  I don't claim any religion since all of them are not without their flaws.  I'm a firm believer that religious beliefs don't make a person better, it's their behavior that does."
I will agree with the last part of his comment, but does the first part make him an agnostic?  In my last committed relationship, with Dudley, we broke up because of God & Church (there were other things...he was lazy, had no motivation, was a couch potato).  We both believed in God, but he didn't believe in church because it is man made. Dudley said he would never go to church and had no intention of taking his future children to church.  Deal breaker for me!

#3 When men show extra courtesy toward women (opening doors, pulling out chairs, etc), this is:
Erica: Admirable and desirable.  Chivalry's not dead.
Him: Unnecessary but appreciated.
Well, he stands by his statement, because he never once opened a door for me in the few times I've seen him.  He did, however, pay for my drinks on the first date.

The thing about OkCupid that people need to watch out for is that it's a free dating site.  With that in mind, some people might be on there to find hook ups or a more "casual" relationship.  I have a disclaimer on my profile:

Granted, I went out on a few dates with a guy from (you pay for that one) a few years ago that said being on was "no different than meeting a girl at a bar."  I found this out on the 3rd time we went out.  It's totally different!  You never really know until you meet the guy.  Honestly, I'm on OkCupid right now because I can't afford EHarmony.  That's the site I really wanted to join, but I figured I'd give this one a shot and see what happens.

I have a new rule for myself with this guy.  I'm not going to initiate with him anymore. Let him come to me! I am gong to take my own advice here.  If this guys wants to date me properly, then he will.  If he doesn't and is only looking for something casual and "hanging out," then we are not right for each other.

*I'll keep you posted*

Movie Monday ~ The Family

Happy Monday everyone!  The work week has returned and I'm already missing the weekend.  I do have a few things to look forward to this week, so hopefully it will go by fast.  Over the weekend I checked out the new movie The Family starring Robert De Niro & Michelle Pfeiffer.

FYI ~ there are spoilers...!

The previews for this movie looked awesome and I was super psyched to see it.  You've got Michelle Pfeiffer blowing up a grocery store, Dianna Agron beating the shit out of some kid with a tennis racket, the son scheming his way through school and of course Robert De Niro.  Sad thing is, the preview for the movie showed all the best parts.

The movie's about a mafia family is put in the witness protection because Giovanni (De Niro) snitched on his friends.  They are placed is a small town in Normandy, France.  Hiding out is not their strong suit.  Their "old ways" quickly come back to them when they get "rubbed the wrong way."  De Niro narrates a lot of the film as his character writes his memoir.  Oh and he beats the plumber almost to death.  What, he got bored!

This movie was, unfortunately, not that great.  In my opinion, anyways.  I was hoping it was going to be much more of an mafia movie than it was. The best part was at the end when the big mafia guys found Giovanni and his family and everyone got shot up!  I give it 2 1/2 stars.  Save it for a Redbox or Netflix night.  At least that way you're already in your pajamas :)

Thanks for stopping by for Movie Monday!  Have a great week and I'll see you next time!

High Five For Friday

1. It's Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's really enough, isn't it?
I am so glad that it's Friday!  It has been quite the week for me.  I found out that a co-worker is leaving and until they replace him I am taking care of his hotel.  Talk about a busy day.  It's about to get crazy!

2.  My brother is moving to Washington DC!!!  Well, Northern Virginia.  He just got a job in DC and will be here in about 2 weeks.  I'm super excited.  My brother and I haven't lived in the same city since high school!

3.  I know I mentioned this in Tuesday's post but...
...I lost 5 pounds last week!  I don't think I did as well this week, but we'll see tomorrow.

4.  On Wednesday I got to see Rooms.  I haven't seen her since she moved back to Miami.  We met up in Clarendon and had some happy hour drinks and then headed to dinner.  It was nice to see her.  Miss her much!
(This picture is from a while ago...I didn't get a good pic on Wednesday)

5.  The New England Patriots have won their first 2 games of the new football season.  Sunday they beat the Buffalo Bills 23 - 21 and last night they beat the NY Jets 13 - 10.  WooHoo...let's keep it up!

I am going to enjoy this weekend sooo much!  I hope you do too!

I'm linking up with Lauren Elizabeth for #H54F.  Go check her out and meet some new bloggers!

I Am Marilyn Monroe

Call me crazy, but I think I was Marilyn Monroe in a previous life.  Let me explain...

About a week or so ago me and a friend, N, were enjoying happy hour and got onto the subject of reincarnation.  N is unsure of reincarnation.  He doesn't like the idea of not being able to use the things we've learned in our life and carry them onto the next.  That's when I suggested that maybe we do, but it's all subconscious.  For example:  Maybe I was an actual movie star.  I went out to Los Angeles in search of stardom.  Maybe, subconsciously, I knew that I wouldn't be happy if I stayed out there for too long.  Maybe the movie star that I was before was incredibly successful, but also incredibly unhappy.  Maybe what I experienced in my past life I took with me into my current one.  I was in Los Angeles for 5 years, became unhappy, and I left.  Then N said he thought I could be Marilyn Monroe! I was SOLD on the idea and then I started putting some pieces together.

Ever since I was little I wanted to be a star.  After college I moved to Los Angeles.  After being there for a few years and needing a steady job, I started working at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Back in the 1950s Marilyn Monroe had her very first modeling photo shoot at the Tropicana Pool at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

When I was 11 years old my mom took this picture of me at our summer pool.

Some other things about the Roosevelt are that Marilyn lived there for 6 months in the 50's.  Her suite is still there - The Monroe Suite.  There is also a mirror that used to be in the hotel that you can see her ghost in.

There's also the television show Smash that I loved!  Too bad it got cancelled.  I have a lot of the songs downloaded to my iPod and I sing them in my car like I'm playing Marilyn myself.

I was reading my fall issue of Glamour and the very last page is this...

There are so many signs!!!!!!

Poor Marilyn died in 1962 at the age of 36.  She was found on August 5th in her Brentwood home.  Her death is considered to be a conspiracy.  Some think she was murdered, but her doctors think it was an overdose.  Marilyn suffered from depression and was being treated for it (as am I).  Marilyn got sucked into the life of stardom.  This is where I think the knowledge of our previous life comes into play.  I was there for 5 years and that last year was my most unhappiest.  I felt lost and like a complete failure.  I knew it was time for me to head back to my family.  I don't know what Marilyn was feeling before she died, but she must have been unhappy.

Maybe reincarnation isn't real.  As a Catholic, I'm not even supposed to believe in it.  I think it's a cool concept.  I have friends from high school that didn't live to see their 18th birthday.  Was that it for them?  Does their life end there?  I also believe in heaven and I suppose the two contradict each other.  Whatever happens after we die I'm not afraid of it!  I plan on living my life to the fullest.  For Halloween this year I have decided to dress up as Marilyn Monroe.  All I need now is some handsome fellow to dress up at JFK!

Shape Up Update Vol 3

It's been a little over a month now since I started my "Diet Coke Project."  When I started my Shape Up Journey I was at 152.2.  Well, I gained some weight last month and when I weighed at home in Roanoke on August 31 I was at 157...eek!  Well, I decided to get my butt moving for real this time.  While I was home I worked out almost every day

Thursday - 8/29 - 3 miles on the Greenway
Friday - 8/30 - full weight circuit, abs, 30 minutes on the treadmill
Saturday - 8/31 - ziplining
    weighed in at 157lbs
Sunday - 9/1 - 3 miles on the Greenway

Good trip home!
I came home to NOVA on Sunday and continued my work outs.

Monday - 9/2 - 3 miles in Shirlinton
Tuesday - 9/3 - full weight circuit and abs at the gym
Wednesday - 9/4 - 4 miles between DC and Shirlington
Nothing Thursday - Sunday

I weighed on Saturday and the scale said 151.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I lost 6 pounds!!!

It's all about the movement.  Yesterday I did 3 miles in Shirlington and today I'm going to hit the weights at the gym and do a little cardio as well.  I knew that I wasn't moving enough before, but now this is even more proof!  I am even more motivated than I was before.  I've never lost that much weight in 1 week.

Here's to getting my butt moving!

Movie Monday ~ FOOTBALL!!!!!!!

Happy Movie Monday!  Fall is totally upon us and you know what that means...

I've always been a fan of sports movies, especially football movies.  With football season starting  yesterday I have been watching some of my favorites.

We Are Marshall
This is a bit of a sad story that turns out happy.  The Marshall University football team has a tragic accident in a plane crash and they all perish.  Matthew McConaughey plays the football coach that comes to Marshall and brings them all together.  It's such a great story!

Remember the Titans
"We are the Titans the Mighty Mighty Titans!"
I just loves this movie!  Denzel Washington and Ryan Gosling..woohoo!  Plus it takes place in Alexandria, VA.  The other cool part of this true story is that my dentist from Roanoke, VA played in the final game and "Roanoke Stadium" aka - Victory Stadium.  The movie has a great soundtrack too.

Varsity Blues
This is another fun movie.  It's not a true story like the other two are, but it's cool.  Paul Walker  and James Van Der Beek (he doesn't do a very good southern accent).

Do you have any favorite sports movies?

High Five For Friday

Happy Friiiiiiiiiiidaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy! WooHoo!

What a week it has been.  I went home to Roanoke to visit the family, went zip lining with mom and dad, celebrated being 30.  Then I had to go back to work. At least it's just a 4 day work week.  Yay for the weekend :)

I hope everyone had a great week.  Here are some highlights from my week ~

1.  On Friday evening Mom and Dad took me out to dinner to this great restaurant in Roanoke called Billy's.  It was lovely!  I had never been there before.  We got there a little early and had drinks at the bar.  Dinner was delicious!  After our meal, our server brought us some champagne and it was yummy!  Such a great birthday!
Cheers to being 30!

Love Mom & Dad!

2.  After dinner on Friday we went home and it was time to open my birthday present.  At least I thought it was a present.  Turns out it was "30 presents for 30 years!"  I was so surprised.  Especially with the last present...a Tiffany & Co necklace.  Love it!

3.  Saturday morning we got up super go Zip Lining!  It was AMAZING!!!!!
We started small with a 500 foot and 450 foot zip line.  Then we moved up to an 1800 and 1600 foot line.  Then the big one...3,000 foot zip line!  I felt like I was flying and didn't want to stop!
4.  As a couple of my 30 presents I got the first two seasons of Boy Meets World.  I discovered Stanford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He played the Assistant Manager of the Market Grocery store!  He was super skinny and had a crazy New York/Jersey accent!  So funny!  I prefer him as Stanford as from Sex and the City.

5.  I had an OkCupid date last night.  He's super cute and had a great sense of humor.  We met out in Clarendon for drinks at a rooftop bar - talked about fun 5K's, TV Shows we like, living in DC.  It was a nice time.  Maybe there's a second date in the near future.  Hopefully! :-)

What were some great moments from your week?  I hope you all had a fantastic week!  I'm linking up with Lauren Elizabeth for today's #H54F.  Check out some other bloggers!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Money Freeze Update

I started my Money Freeze on August 12th.  It has now been 25 days, so I thought I would update you on my progress.  The first 20 days turned out to be "let's see how I normally spend my money."  I did not do well with the freeze.  I looked through my money notebook to find out how I unnecessarily spent some money  ~

Target for only God knows what
McDonalds (don't judge)
3 trips to Daily 14 for breakfast sandwiches
DSW on new shoes...I had a BDay coupon
Austin Grill for happy hour
Chipotle for lunch one day
7 Eleven for a diet coke
Ping for dinner one night
rejoining Netflix
Red Box
Whole Foods for lunch one day

A total of $205.43

Gee, looking at that list it's no wonder that I'm not losing weight! You don't realize how much it adds up until you see it like this.  With $200 extra dollars I could have put that towards paying off my credit card!  I went over my expenses on Monday evening and have already notated what each September paycheck is going towards.

September has some extra bills that are huge - Property Tax and Car Registration.  Those two are taking a chunk out that I won't be able to put towards other bills.  Had I not spent $200 on frivolous things, then I could have put that towards those other bills.  I'll learn one day.  I'm learning right now.  That's all you can do, right.  Learn as you go...learn from your mistakes.  Life's about learning.  If I would stop spending my money on trips to Daily 14, 7 Eleven, and Whole Foods I would be eating better and losing weight.  For things like this I need to put forth the effort and prepare my lunch the night before.  Also wake up early enough to make breakfast.  I know I've said it before, but I'm treating September and my 30th birthday as a fresh start.

A Great Gift Idea

As you could you not...I turned 30 last week.  This is the second to last time I'll mention it :)  #H54F is coming up, ya know!  Anywho, my mom had been trying to think of something since this was a big birthday for me.  Boy did she nail it on the head!  My mom actually found this idea on another blog (don't know which one, thought).  It's "30 Presents for 30 Years."  You can really do this for any age at all.  It was so much fun to open up the 30 presents.  My mom kept everything under $10 and they were all very practical.  Take a look at some of what she got me...

I was totally surprised when she brought this bag out!  Her and my dad worked so hard to collect everything.  They were exhausted from shopping and wrapping every single individual item!

Oh and I had to unwrap them in numerical order.

1.Daughter book  2. Ladybug Spatula  3. I Love Bacon dish towel  4. I Love Bacon Magnet  5. Winnie the Pooh DVD  6. Twizzlers  7. Season 1 of Boy Meets World  8. Sesame Sticks from Fresh Market  9. Season 2 of Boy Meets World  10. Betty Boop Car Strap Cover  11. Daisy Air Freshener for car  12.  Spin Brush Tooth Brushes  13. A new Hand Towel  14. Silk Pillow Case  15. Shower Cap  16. New Bath Towel  17. Essie Nail Polish  18. "E"  19. Apple Cinnamon Infuser  20. Workout Top  21. Subway Gift Card  22. Fancy Cakes  23. Regal Cinema Gift Card  24. Bath and Body Works Gift Card  25. Paris Lotion  26. iTunes Gift Card  27. "E" Note Cards  28. Journal  29. Daughter Magnet  30. Wine Goblet and Tiffany & Co. Necklace

This was a funny one, because that night at dinner I ordered the bacon vinaigrette dressing for my salad!  Bacon just makes everything better.

I love ladybugs!  I probably won't ever  use this, because I'm afraid that it will take the design away.  It's really pretty in my kitchen, though.

I was so surprised to find a Tiffany & Co. teal box!  So excited that I cried...

The necklace is sterling silver with my birthstone in it.  The sides are engraved.  One side says "Erica" and the other side says "8-28-13" so I will always remember when I got it (and when I turned 30).

This was probably one of the coolest gift ideas that I've seen and received.  Thanks mom!  It was definitely a birthday that I won't forget!

My 1 Year Blog-iversary!

I cannot believe that I have been blogging for 1 year today.  I blog more than I journal!  Looking to the Stars is my third blogging attempt and apparently my most successful.  My first blog was all about books.  I had made a goal to read all of the books I owned, but had not read yet.  That was 65 books.  I was going to keep track and blog about it.  I think it lasted through 6 or 7 books, then I stopped.  My second blog was called Matching My Way to True Love.  I had just joined and was going to blog about my experience on it.  I didn't write a single post.  Last year my Bestie started her very own blog - Pursuit of Pink.  She was part of the inspiration to start a third blog.

I was working at job that I was very bored at.  I was working the evening shift at a hotel (not overnight...good Lord no) as a front office manager.  The evening shift has little to do; the offices are all closed, most of the check-ins are done by 7 or 8pm, and it's quiet.  Especially during the week.  Occasionally there is an incident, but not usually.  Once everything was done my guest service agents and I had nothing to do.  So, decided to start a blog to have something to do.

And that is how Looking to the Stars came to be.

I'm not a beauty or fashion blogger.  I'm not into trying out different beauty products.  I'm the kind of person that sticks to a product once I try it.  Same thing with my fashion sense.  I am very particular about those kinds of things.  I like movies, television, and books.  They say to write what you know and that's what I do.  A couple months ago I started a regular post called Movie Monday.  I think I might even make it a link up! I just have to figure out the button code and linky thing.  Movie Monday started because I like to see so many movies and had posted some reviews.  I think I might mix in some topics as well and make it a link up like the book chat.  This is one of my favorite link ups with Sweet Green Tangerine.

Blogging isn't what I thought it would be. Then again, I guess I really didn't know what it was going to be. I've learned a lot about blogging and a lot about myself in the process.  I used to stress over how many followers I have and why people aren't reading my blog.  I mean, there are blogs with thousands of followers.  Bestie is almost up to 1,000 on a lot of her media outlets. Then I remind myself that I have totally different audiences than a lot of bloggers do.  Sure, maybe if I was a fashionista and beauty gal I would have more followers, but I have to be true to myself.  Fashion and beauty aren't my thing! Movies, TV, and Books are my thing!  If I buy a great new purse or pair of shoes, then I might post about them.  I'll at least mention them in a High Five For Friday post.  That's another favorite link up with Lauren Elizabeth.

What can you expect from Looking to the Stars?  I will post when I feel inspired.  That might be 5 days a week, 3 days a week, or even 7 days a week!  I can't force it.  I need to let it come to me.  You can definitely expect a lot of movie stuff to come.  There are so many movies coming out this fall and I want to see them all!  I will be keeping you posted on my "Shape Up Journey."  I'll keep you posted on my life as well.  I'm on OkCupid right now, so maybe some romance might come into play soon.  I'm 30 years old now...I have entered a new decade.  Fall is upon us now that we are in September.  I feel like a fresh start and I'm going to do it right!

Here's to another great year, a fresh start, and to doing it right!
