Reading Room Update!

I thought since the year is half way through that I would recap what I have read so far this year.  At the beginning of the year I committed to reading 40 books in 2013.  Well, that turned out to be a lot harder than I thought.  I have got through 10 books so far!  When I look at other blogger's book challenge widgets and see that they've read over 30 or 40 books, I'm like, "how did you do that???"  I have to keep my lifestyle in mind.  I work a full time job and sometimes when I get home from work I just want to crash.  I did put my Netflix and Hulu accounts on hold for the summer in order to get more reading done.  So far it's helping.  Here's a summary of what I have read so far...

1. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  I had read this book years ago and I love the story.  We read this in book club and had a great time discussing it.  We even found a quiz online that will detirmine which character you are (here).  The quiz I just took said that I'm 90% Marmee (2nd runner up was Meg at 60%).  The quiz we took at book club told me I was Amy.  I'm happier being Marmme or Meg.

2.  Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper.  I loved this book.  I am totally a cat person and love reading stories about pets.  This was a very touching story about a blind kitten who was taken in and loved.

3.  Dark Places by Gillian Flynn.  If you liked Gone Girl, then you will LOVE this one.  I really want to read her other book, Sharp Objects.

4.  The Promise of Stardust by Pricille Sibley.  This is a total chick-lit book for me; similiar to the style of Nicholas Sparks.  You have love, life, tragedy, betrayal and some more love.

5.  The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  This is now one of my all time favorite books.  I was surprised by how much I loved this book.  It will stay with me forever and I'll always recommend it!

6.  The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  This book was MAGICAL!  It is a lovely story and you should definitely check it out!

7.  The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson.  This trilogy simply amazes me.  I have read book series and trilogies before, but this one is so great.  It just keeps you going.  Like the energizer bunny sort of feel!  I still have the third and final book to read and I'm very much looking forward to finding out what happens with Lisbeth.

8.  The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks.  Loved it!  It's hard for me to not love a book that he writes.

9.  Men and Dogs by Kate Crouch.  This is the second book of Kate's that I have read; the first one Girls in Trucks.  I really like her storytelling.  The women aren't perfect.  In fact, they always seem to be a bit of a mess.  It's a nice change to read every once in a while.

10.  Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James.  Okay people, I read the first two and this third one I can't do.  I got to page 126 and I just don't care!  I get that the point of it all is "sexy" and that Ana is this naive young girl and Christian is this intense, control freak, man of your dreams type deal.  But honestly, I really don't care about these characters.  I'm not going to waste my time reading a book that I really don't want to read.

11.  The next book I'm reading is actually a book I just picked up.  Stephen King's new book Joyland.  It's about a young man who gets a summer job at a carnival to get over his broken heart.  It takes place in 1973 and I'm super excited!  This is actually my first Stephen King novel!

12.  Another book that I'm working on is Jillian Michaels's Slim for Life.  I'm not one to buy diet books, but this book seems like it's going to be really good and I LOVE Jillian!  I have a total girl crush on her.  I've read the introduction and the user's guide and she wants to help you make a plan that will work in your life.

This is where I'm at so far.  With that said :) I am focusing on the next 30 books that I'm going to try to read by the end of the year!  I need to read 5 books a month (at least) in order to hit my goal of 40.  Some of the books on my list are shorter, but some are huge!  I'll get through them!  This is the first time I've given myself a book goal and I really really want to accomplish this!

Happy Reading!
